More Ways to Prep for Great Heating This Winter

A few posts back, we encouraged you to schedule professional maintenance for your heating system before winter. Texas doesn’t always enjoy mild winters, after all, and you want your heating system to be ready in case of a cold snap.

If you still haven’t scheduled heating maintenance in Farmers Branch, TX, it’s not too late. We’re enjoying pleasant weather at the moment, so it’s a good time to take advantage of the warmth and have our technicians give the heating system a good inspection and tune-up.

Professional maintenance is the most important part of preparing your heating system, but not the only one. We’re going to look at some of the other ways to ensure you’re ready for whatever cold might come your way this season.

Change the HVAC Filter (Regularly!)

This is the most important maintenance step you need to do on your own. The filter on your HVAC cabinet prevents dust and other debris from entering the heater and AC through the return air ducts. After one to three months, the filter will become clogged enough that it will restrict airflow through the heating system. This means higher bills, poorer heating, and even damage to the HVAC system. We’ll change the filter during our maintenance visit (and we’re glad to show you where the filter is and how to change it), but you’ll have to follow up with changes every one to three months after this.

See That Room Vents Are Open and Unblocked

Take a tour of your house and look at all the room vents to see that they’re unobstructed and fully open. The vents can become accidentally blocked during fall when the HVAC system isn’t running regularly, and people sometimes close the shutters on them believing it can help save energy (it doesn’t). When all the vents are open and free from obstructions, it helps the heater work more efficiently and prevents damage to the ductwork.

Clear the Area Around the Outdoor Cabinet (If You Have a Heat Pump)

If you have a heat pump to provide year-round comfort, check the outside cabinet to see that it has no obstructions close to it, such as leaves and branches. These may have built up over the fall. If the cabinet doesn’t have a clear space for a foot around it, it won’t be able to properly draw in the heat it will use to warm your house. We also recommend cleaning the cabinet if it’s dirty: use a hose on low pressure to wash it down.

Replace an Old Heater

Obviously, you won’t need to do this every year! Heating systems can sometimes last from 10 to 20 years depending on their type. But if you have an older heater that’s struggled recently with working, you may want to consider having it replaced before the winter weather arrives. The best way to find out if you need a new heater is to consult with our team during maintenance. We’ll give you honest answers about your heater’s future and when it’s best to replace it.
