Is Your AC Ready for Retirement? Let’s Take a Look

You can get a good long service life from a central air conditioning system if you keep up with regular annual maintenance and call for repairs whenever it shows signs of malfunctioning. But the most attentive care for an air conditioner won’t make it last forever. If your AC is more than 10 years old, it’s approaching the point you’ll need an air conditioning replacement in Dallas, TX.

The big question you face is when to replace the AC. We do not recommend you simply let the air conditioner run until it finally breaks down permanently. That not only puts you in an emergency replacement situation, it also means a long stretch where the aging AC will waste power and work poorly. It’s not worth it: you want to replace the air conditioner before the serious decline. In this post, we’ll look at ways to tell that time has come.

The air conditioner is more than 15 years old

We mentioned that once an air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it has entered the retirement zone. That doesn’t mean you have to replace it immediately, because many ACs make it to 15 years while still working efficiently and effectively. Over 15 years, however, is dicey. That’s the upper limit for most cooling systems, and we recommend you go ahead and replace the system at this point—the decline is not far off.

The air conditioner has turned into noise pollution

Modern air conditioners operate quietly enough that you should be able to carry on a normal conversation in the house while yours is running. A few odd sounds here and there can point toward a repair issue. When the AC starts making a racket that’s interrupting the peace of your house, it’s basically asking for you to replace it.

The cost to run the air conditioner continues to rise

The last one or two years of an AC’s service life will see the fastest decline in its energy efficiency. A well-maintained air conditioner will only lose around 5% of its efficiency until those last years, so you’ll see steady electrical costs during each summer (provided your usage remains roughly the same). When summer electrical costs begin to climb without a noticeable cause, the AC may be in its last decline.

The frequency and cost of air conditioner repairs are too high

Maintenance can prevent the majority of repairs an AC will need over its life, but eventually, the wear on the unit will become too much and parts will start to fail with greater frequency, leading to both more and costlier repairs. You shouldn’t need to repair an AC more than once a year, and any single repair that costs more than half the price of a replacement is better invested in a new cooling system.

You don’t have to make the choice to replace an old AC on your own. Our expert technicians can help you. We’ll give you honest answers about whether to keep repairing the system or to have a replacement, and we’ll do the necessary work right the first time.
